Automatic Cashback Deals (zero risk option)
With these deals you are trading down your handset for cash. There is no risk, they will issue your money as soon as you take out the contract.
Say you were going to order a fairly expensive contract, 1200 inclusive minutes per month, and they were going to give you a free i-phone with that deal, and you were to turn round and say
"I do not need an i-phone, can I have a cheaper phone and you give me the difference back in cash".
That is essentially how the instant cashback deals work. If you do need a lot of minutes, but are not bothered about having an expensive phone, you can get the same tarrif with a cheaper handset and they will give you money back to compensate, or free gifts like a laptop, games console. Whatever they think will make you take out a contract with them!
Cashback By Redemption
Cashback by redemption, which is conditional. The retailer will put obsticles in your way to try and prevent you claiming. For example, they may say you need to produce all your phone bills to claim... if you lose one of your bills you cannot claim. This kind of deal is used on promtions offering "free line rental", such as the deals on this page:

Essentially, some people run their phone for free, others end up paying full price, perhaps even a little more. That kind of deal is a risk.
